Workshop Testimonials from 2019

Rick Hulbert’s workshop is unique. His synthesis of art and science . . . neuroscience, in particular, is stimulating because it is consistent with many concepts I’ve learned previously about photographic art. Rick talks about these notions with authority, owing to his extensive background in design. His craftsmanship in digital editing is superb; I gained a renewed appreciation of post-processing. Rick’s open-minded instructional approach is inspiring; after all, there are no absolutes in art. Finally, at the workshop, I truly enjoyed being in the company of so many accomplished individuals who shared a passionate interest in photography and the desire to learn from one another. Thank you.

I’ve had the great fortune of taking many of Rick’s workshops and continue to learn new things about photography in every instance. Rick has become my single greatest influence in developing my photography skills and I have had the satisfaction of becoming not only a better photographer, but a much more acute and sensitive observer of my environment. Rick has taught me not only how to take a better photo but also how to see and appreciate the complexity and beauty of the world around me.

I travelled half way around the world to attend Rick Hulbert’s Ultimate Travel Photography Workshop and without a doubt it was worth it. Rick’s intellectual appreciation and knowledge of photography as an art form is both astounding and enlightening. His architectural background was particularly informative from an urban landscape perspective. Rick’s workshop was a perfect mix of in-class discussion and teaching morphing into outdoor practical shooting demonstration. Rick gives generously of his knowledge and experience in both situations. He makes sure that every student takes away with them as many new and improved photographic techniques as he can possibly impart. A great sense of comradery developed between participants which was in part due to Rick’s friendly and inclusive repertoire. He is a very talented teacher and I would recommend any workshop, irrespective of one’s photography level or experience, that Rick is giving.
— Sarah Chandler, Brisbane, Australia
Rick puts together a top-notch presentation, with something in it for photographers of every level, showing a real sophisticated understanding of not only photography as a craft but also art in general as well as human psychology. He’s generous with his time, and I felt fortunate to have his experience and expertise on hand to provide thoughtful responses to all my questions.
— James Alfred Friesen
Rick is a fabulous instructor. The street photography workshop in Vancouver was excellent. I’ve been on other photography tours where I’ve been virtually ignored because I use an iPhone. Rick was as generous with me as he was with the ‘big camera people’. He covers history of photography, importance of light, best way to shoot people and buildings, plus much more. Time whirls by, his class is fun as well as educational, he answers every question and helps students see around corners and beyond the clouds. I’m now on a mission to see the familiar through new eyes. I came away braver and more confident.

Recently I attended my first ever photography workshop by Rick Hulbert. Not knowing what to expect I was more than impressed by Rick’s knowledge and teaching ability. We had a great group and were able to spend 4 fun filled days learning, shooting and improving on our skills.

I have just completed my 3rd workshop with Rick. He is an amazing teacher, passionate about photography, always eager to share his knowledge about photography and architecture. His examples and anecdotes are filled with humour. I learned so much and my skills have grown and developed under Rick’s guidance. Thank you, Rick, for an absolutely wonderful learning experience.

Just finished a 5 day “Ultimate Vancouver Photo Workshop”. Our instructors, Rick Hulbert, Marion McCristall & Fernando Piçarra are amazing photographers in their own rights. They endured very long days with good humour. For me this was a first time to actually wander about our city, early in the morning before most sane people were stirring. It was an opportunity to see and photograph what tourists come here to see. I’ve got lots of pictures to process now, they will follow as I find the time. Thanks so much to our wonderful instructors for their time, their dedication and their willingness to help others improve our shared art form.

I have just completed the photography course in Portugal. My goal in this course was to find a way beyond just being a good photographer. What does it take to produce at least one or two outstanding photographs?
Rick helped show the way in the outstanding setting of Portugal for every aspect of photography, landscape, urban, street, long exposure, sunset . . . you name it.
He emphasizes detailed attention to composition, a strong method of shooting and an excellent program of post production using Lightroom.
Being a great photographer takes hard work and a lot of shooting. . . Rick helped show the way of getting there. If you want a great visit like that of Portugal and a way to improve your photography, consider a week long course with Rick Hulbert.

Rick masterfully weaves the conceptual and the visual into a story that both informs and entertains. It is delightful.

I have had the fortunate pleasure of taking a number of courses from Rick over the last decade. All of Rick’s courses have been highly professional & extremely well produced. They have included the subjects of Urban Garden Photography, Street Photography, Urban Architectural Photography, and Urban Travel Photography.
The workshop in Northwest Italy was one of the best organized and technically helpful workshops that I have experienced.
Rick’s patience, expertise and one-on-one time with each of us was most helpful. What has impressed me about Rick, is his inclusive teaching style and generous mentorship of his students. I would highly recommend any of Rick’s workshops to photographers of any skill level.
— Bruce Stevenson, Vancouver Island, British Columbia
Rick Hulbert was very generous with sharing his well studied and considerable knowledge of photography including high definition photography, long exposure photography, manipulation of histograms, street photography, architectural photography, and the science behind photography. He really cares that the students come away with a much better grasp of this art form and the methodology involved in creating gripping photographs.

This past Spring I had the opportunity to attend Rick’s Advanced Architectural Photography course in Vancouver, BC. I took the course hoping to learn tenants of Architectural Photography that I could apply to my work as a photographer and marketing professional in the A/E/C industry. I was thrilled to find that the course exceeded all my expectations. On day one I learned specific skills that I could immediately apply to my work – both in the camera and in post-production. The four days were maximized; we visited a wide-range of venues, had time to edit our work in a classroom setting to allow for questions and could attend both a sunrise and a sunset shoot. I would highly recommend this course to anyone hoping to expand upon their photographic skills and knowledge, both architectural and otherwise.

Thank you for a wonderful course and, of course, for taking the time to look over my travel books. Rest assured that I have taken your thoughts and comments to heart. . . I looked at the work you have put up on the site and, as used as I am, to looking at excellent work I have to say I was blown away by your beautiful photographs. It is an inspiration to see the work you have done. So Rick, a heartfelt thank you. From beginning to end, I think I can say all participants would join me in my gratitude, for a wonderful experience that will inspire us for our future photographic work.
— Jim Bradbury
Thank you very much for the learning experience you presented during the past four days. I very much appreciated your view of architectural photography, the information regarding the Nikon Z6 and Z7, the exciting colour theory information, and the terrific LR post processing suggestions. I also appreciated your sense of humour, which made the time spent with the group more enjoyable!
