You understand and appreciate the buttons, dials and menus on your camera. You know the fundamentals of photography. Now it’s time to take the next step and create some great images.

If you are a graduate of the Nikonians Academy workshops on Mastering Your Camera or are an accomplished photographer in your own right, then learning about photographing the urban environment will do wonders for improving your overall photography.

During this two-day workshop with Rick Hulbert, you will learn how to photograph 3-dimensional space…both outdoors and indoors. Rick’s thorough knowledge of architecture and photography will help you learn how to emphasize the appearance of depth in your images while also helping you dramatically improve your travel photography. The techniques and methods you learn in this workshop directly translate to landscape photography or portraiture that include buildings and structures in cities, towns, and rural environments.

Extended Dynamic Range Imaging (EDR and HDR)

Anyone who has worked with architectural photography before knows that when photographing daytime interiors or exteriors on bright sunny days, it is important to consider capturing a very wide dynamic range of light. Often, a single photo will contain numerous elements that exceed the capability of your sensor to register the highlights and the shadows.

The difference in brightness between the highlights and shadows is referred to the dynamic range of light and extending this range in your imaging is a critical aspect for creating stunning photographs. We will show you how to maximize the dynamic range of today’s modern sensors while giving you an excellent understanding of High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging across multiple exposures. Also, you will see how a greater understanding of Extended Dynamic Range (EDR) imaging can make your single-image captures sing!

Equipment

There is no requirement for fancy equipment at this workshop. Ideally, you’ll have a dSLR or camera that allows you to vary the exposure, but any and every brand of camera will work. We strongly encourage participants with Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Olympus, Pentax, Sony, Leica, and any other camera brands to attend. The principles taught will also apply to point and shoot cameras, mirrorless cameras and even camera phones.

This two-day workshop includes:

  • Daily lectures
  • Hands-on field photography
  • Constructive image evaluations from selected attendee photos
